SMS still ahead in communication charts

Today, SMS is still the favorite communication channel.

SMS remains the most popular communication tool on mobile devices, beating e-mail and voice calls, a survey by Nokia shows.

The online poll found that 21.2% of mobile users prefer to send text messages, compared to 18.7% for e-mail and 17.1% voice calls. Facebook ranked fourth in the charts, with 10.3% of users picking the social network, while 8.6% of respondents still want to talk face-to-face.

Nokia’s survey also showed that users still rely on cellular communications when it comes to voice calls. VoIP market leader Skype was rated by 5.9% of those quizzed, while just 2% selected landline calls. However, the poll also shows that video calls remain a niche market, with less than 1% of consumers ticking that box.

Blogger Adam Fraser reckons SMS and e-mail remain popular because they are silent and help ensure key details aren’t missed out. But he warns that traditional pitfalls of such messaging remain – namely that the tone of the text can be misinterpreted.

The Top 20 Global operators in Q3

A clear overview of top 20 global operators can be seen as the graph shown below.

Wireless Intelligence has collected a list of the world's 20 largest mobile operators, ranked by the number of subscribers, as of the third quarter of 2011.

The firm said that carriers' minority holdings (meaning, any assets that they own less than 50 percent of) are excluded from this list. So, for example, Vodafone and Verizon Wireless are listed separately, since Vodafone does not have a majority ownership of Verizon Wireless.

According to Wireless Intelligence, carriers in Asia and Latin America have been moving up in the rankings of this list during the past year. The firm said there were significant gains by operators in China, India and Indonesia--emerging markets that have been growing at a rapid pace--which has led to slippage among carriers in the United States and Western Europe.

However, the firm said that the top five spots--held by China Mobile, Vodafone, América Móvil, Telefónica, and Bharti Airtel--have remained unchanged during the past year.

Pakistan - World 'biggest' database of 85 million voters (SMS service)

The Guinness World Records has sought details from Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to be named for the global record for launching the world's biggest database and short messaging service (SMS) of 85 million new voters.

An ECP spokesman told Business Recorder on Thursday that the Guinness World Records had approached the Commission and sought details of the world's biggest SMS service and the database of 85 million new voters.

The spokesman said that the Guinness World Records' officials would undertake research and if no other organisation in the world was available with such huge service, the ECP would be nominated for Guinness World Records within next three to four weeks.

The ECP on February 29, 2012, launched, what it claimed, the world's biggest SMS campaign for verification of 85 million new electoral rolls, displayed on 55,000 centers across the country.

Soon after the launch, the SMS service for the citizens was hit by 50,000 messages within 20 minutes.
